As music is the poetry of sound, so is painting the poetry of sight.” ~James McNeil Whistler

9 x 23 inches

This is the first painting done of the second set of Merritt Parkway paintings, so I was indeed, "On the Road Again." Willy Nelson is in my vocabulary here. Cars are peeking out at us as well as going in the other direction. While this may be about many things, it's also about continuity, perseverance, connectivity and our path.

This oil illustrates the end of the day, going home just as the rain is clearing. There is still some time left for daylight. The headlights reflect on the wet road while the car to the left acknowledges the viewer saying that we are all here on this earth together.

pastel and acrylic
13" x 24"

This is the first pastel of the series and depicts the beautiful art deco Easton Turnpike Bridge. The bridge has channels down each side with a hollowed out basket of stone where it looks like you could put a very large floral arrangement.
This is one of my favorite bridges. I also like the lamp post shown to the right; it has a nice touch to the curve of its post at the top and inside its shade is a glowing orange light that you can barely see. Also interesting to note is the side of the road where there is an asphalt ridge. See how irregular it is, as if a few cars have hit it or maybe when it was made the person who formed it was having an off day?! It's just part of the charm of the Merritt, showing its "human" side.

I've painted this bridge 3 times and I always feel its "strength". When George Dunkelberger, who designed all the Merritt Parkway bridges, designed this one, he made it look like a fortified bridge. This bridge is modeled in the French Renaissance Revival style.

This little Ridgefield water trough was designed to water horses and there is a little lower area for dogs to quench their thirst, too. It was presented to the town by Life Magazine founder John Ames Mitchell who lived on West Lane. Originally placed on the corner of Main and Catooah Streets, once automobiles made the scene, it was moved to its current location at West and Olmstead Lanes.

I was asked to paint a hubcap for a Landfill project in PA, so I did. I decided to get hold of another hubcap to paint for the Merritt Parkway Series and I found a great one from an auto parts store down in Norwalk, CT. This was a challenging, but satisfying piece to work on.

Some of the pines on the parkway are so beautiful. These two were majestic, outstretched and brave standing in the median of the parkway. They were one of the reasons I first wanted to paint the parkway.

It turned out that these particular pines sit in the median between the two service stations on the Wilbur Cross. The Wilbur Cross is the continuation of the Merritt built a few years after the Merritt's completion. These beautiful pines are still there, but last winter was a little hard on them and they are not quite as regal as they were. But here they are, the image preserved.

This oil is on copper, which is fun to use as a surface since the beautiful copper color shows through in some places and radiates warmth throughout the piece. There's a glow that is uniquely belonging to this painted copper.

I was at a standstill while traffic on the other side heading south whizzed by me and my fellow north-bounders. This was the view. The red lights from the car brakes lit up the inside of the bridge and the cars speeding by on the south bound lane were a blur of light. I wanted this piece to be colorful and contemporary.
